As part of our DTI-supported
Innovation in Manufacturing Initiative, we are investigating
alternative methods of producing antibody-based
therapeutic products. We are looking at new techniques
for the stages in antivenom production from serum
processing to final product filling, with the eventual
aim of transferring a simpler and more cost effective
process out to the countries like Nigeria where
snake bites are frequent and cause much suffering.
The main principles of our approach, which we will
be testing in the new clean-rooms, involve bag technology
to contain and protect the product during processing,
developing the enzyme digestion phase and using
isolators only at critical procedures such as final
filling.
